Waist training is the process of gradually tightening your corset over weeks and months to pull in floating ribs and even do some realignment of your internal organs to achieve a smaller waistline. Waist training dates back to the 1500's, but was most commonly worn by fashionable European and American women in the 1800's and early 1900's. In fact, the corset was one of the first mass-produced fashion garments for women.
Waist trainers have grown in popularity over the past few years, and as with anything trendy, it's important to make sure you do your research before jumping on the trend train! At Crazsweat we have a unique position and perspective when it comes to waist training. Over the past 10 years, we've sold thousands of corsets and girdles, and have benefited from hundreds of customers' feedback on how their waist training journey should look and feel. So today, we want to talk to you about whether waist training is safe! Hopefully we've cleared up any misinformation or misconceptions about this practice and given you more information before you decide whether you like it or not.
What is a corset actually modifying when you train your waist? Waist training with a steel corset won't change your butt in any way. Your hip bones will stay still. But that's not the case with your two bottom ribs.
Those ribs are your floating ribs, and if you wear a corset high enough to cover your lower ribs, with patience and hard work on your waist, those two ribs can be pulled in with your waist, making you an hourglass shape. But keep in mind that in most cases the body modification you do with waist training isn't permanent and you'll need to keep doing some corset maintenance, otherwise those ribs will immediately float back to where they started! If you decide to start here, following some basic rules can make the lower back training process safer and more comfortable. Is waist training or wearing a corset safe? The short answer is: yes! The slightly longer answer is: Corset and waist training is perfectly safe as long as you practice what we at OC call "safe and sane" waist training exercises.
Lower back training only tightens the two floating ribs in your lower body, which are meant to move. Can waist training or wearing a corset cause organ damage? Long-wearing and tight corsets can and often do redistribute organs (kidneys, liver, intestines). It's worth noting, however, that pregnancy has a similar effect on a woman's internal organs.
Can waist training or wearing a corset cause acid reflux? If the corset is too small or tight, the pressure on the digestive tract can lead to reflux. If this happens, you can relax or remove your corset at mealtime. Listen to your body and you will find out what works best.
Can waist training or wearing a corset cause bloating? Waist training itself does not cause bloating. If you experience bloating from eating, the extra compression of a corset may make it even more uncomfortable. It's not the corset's fault and can be fixed with dietary adjustments.
Can waist training or wearing a corset cause back pain? Absolutely not! A corset should feel like a tight hug. Pain of either kind indicates a misfit or operator error. If you're using a corset that has a true waist-reducing effect and tightens evenly, you shouldn't experience any back pain.
Can waist training or wearing a corset cause shortness of breath? Because a corset compresses your torso and reduces your lung capacity, your lungs compensate by taking more frequent and deeper breaths. Note that this is often more noticeable in over-the-breast corsets that cover the breasts. As long as you're not doing any strenuous cardio in a corset (not recommended anyway), you probably won't notice the effect it has on your breathing.
You can even sing or perform opera in a corset!
